THE INCANTATION OF KUPE-ARIKI
The Matawhaorua of Kuramarotini, of Rongorongo, commissioned by Toto-Ariki.
At Whangaroa stands Turi Ariki, at Te Whare Poutahi, the sacred ancestral house, the foremost standing place, where the two hulls are bound together. The mouth of the shark.
Let the heavens stand! Let the heavens stand firm!
The kneeling woman of the vast ocean, the many radiating tentacles of the celestial octopus of the heavens.
Let the ocean spread! Let the ocean extend!
The stars rise in the night. The stars rise in the daylight. The fires of the heavens shine. They rise, they rise, they rise!
This is Matawhaorua of Whitirangimamao, of Whiro Tupua, the sacred altar beyond Hawaiki.
The vessel of the ancient pathways, of the ancestral supernatural beings, and of the many tentacles of Tumurangiwhenua.
There are two hulls, two ancestral lines: Rua Uri and Rua Tea.
There are two sacred cords, yet one vessel.
May there be one pathway to Tītoremāhutu-rangi.
Maninikura, Kikirangi, Tohinuiarangi, Komarurangi and Rerewhakapiko the sacred incantation of this house.
The celestial house of Tāwhaki Nui a Hāmanga.
There stands Hine Te Aparangi!
There stands Kuramarotini!
There stands Rongorongo!
There stands Muturangi!
Together they arrive, together they arrive, together they arrive, at Te Whatukura Ō Tangaroa, within the breaking waters of the sacred ocean.
Rongorongo, hold fast to the hull!
Kuramarotini, hold fast to the hull!
Muturangi, hold fast to the prow of the vessel!
The magnificent carved spiral of the double-hulled canoe. May it never separate. May it never break.
May it never be taken by Te Kūpenga Ō Taramainuku, the sacred net of Taramainuku.
If any hand wrongfully takes the incantation of Kupe-Ariki without permission, death will befall them. Death, death, utter death!
Tangaroa! Tāne! Rongo! Tū!
Hear the sacred call! Hear its resounding voice!
Break apart the foaming waves, clear the pathway, make it firm, and lay down Te Aurere kura, the sacred pathway, of Hekenukumaingāiwi and Hekenukumaingāwaka.
Te Pito Ō Te Pūtahi Nui Ō Rehua Tikitiki, the sacred centre of the great gathering place of Rehua in the highest heavens.
Te Matau a Māui, the sacred fishhook of Māui.
This is the Matawhaorua of Toto-Ariki.
This is the Matawhaorua of Kuramarotini.
This is the Matawhaorua of Rongorongo.
This is the Matawhaorua of Kupe-Ariki.
Gaze towards the stars, towards the shimmering, rippling waters of Te Wānanga Ō Kupe Mai Tawhiti, the ancient celestial knowledge of Kupe from distant lands.
Draw the vessel towards the horizon.
Let the winds lift it, let the stars guide it, and let the hands of the ancestors navigate its course.
May the heart of the celestial navigator become one with the heart of Kura, with the authority of the Ariki, and with The Sacred Pathway of Kupe, Reti and Rātā who perished at Pikopiko I whitī.
Let it shine, let it shine, towards Te Kura Tātai Aorangi Ō Apaapa Te Rangi, the sacred knowledge of the celestial pathways.
Lift my vessel to Te Tomokanga ki Ngā Rangitūhāhā, the gateway to Ngā Rangitūhāhā, to Ngā Ara Tukutuku, Te Ara Tiatia, Te Pūmotomoto, Tikitikiōrangi and Te Toi Ō Ngā Rangi.
Open the gateways of IO!
Raise it to Te Tāhūhūnuiōterangi, the great ridgepole of the heavens.
At the ascending of the sun, there stands Rāhiri, my Atua.
From the first glimmer of dawn into the full light of day!
Toto-Ariki!
Hine Te Aparangi!
Kuramarotini!
Muturangi!
Matawhaorua!
Kupe-Ariki!
Where shall it make landfall?
It shall make landfall at Pouahi!
Where shall it make landfall?
It shall make landfall at Tairutu!
Where shall it make landfall?
It shall make landfall at Te Hokianga Nui Ō Kupe, the great returning place of Kupe.
The sacred place where my ancestor, Kupe Nuku Atua IO-Arikitapu, was laid to rest. All the Kupe of Te Maraeroa rest here.
Come forth, the sacred adze of Rangatūwhenua! Whose is the adze?, it is the adze of Kupe.
Firmly established, secured and bound, let it be so, let it be so! The joining together, the gathering together, the binding of all into unity!
