Kupe-Ariki and the Renaissance of KŌPŪ ARIKI in Aotearoa, Te Ika ā Māui
Within the traditions preserved by Te Whare Atua Ō IO Tikitikiōrangi and Te Whare Ō Kupe-Ariki, Kupe-Ariki is integral to the renaissance of KŌPŪ ARIKI.
According to these traditions, there are nine Kupe throughout Te Moana Nui a Hiva. The first was an Ariki Tapairu known as Te Kupenga Ō Te Ao, whose origins are traced to Tuamotu, around 700 AD.
According to these traditions, Te Kupenga Ō Te Ao marks the beginning of the physical whakapapa that extends through the succeeding eight Kupe, and continues through the living Ariki bloodlines today.
According to these traditions, the Kupe who journeyed to Aotearoa was Kupe-Ariki, the eighth of the nine Kupe.
Before his voyage, he received moemoeā matakite (visionary dreams) from IO Te Rangitūātinitini at Opoa, Ra'iātea.
Within these revelations, IO instructed him to bring the IO Whare Wānanga and the IO Priesthood (Tohungatanga) here.
According to these traditions, he fulfilled that responsibility, establishing the spiritual foundations of IO, in Aotearoa, 900AD. He also lays a mauri Uruuruwhenua at Te Rerenga Wairua, Ngā Rākau Pūriri (Bombay), and Porirua.
Within Te Wānanga Manuscripts of Hokianga 1800 - 1958, these traditions recognise a celestial and physical genealogy extending through more than 700 names, from IO Retea to Kupe-Ariki.
Accordingly, this genealogy is understood in two interconnected parts.
The first comprises approximately 600 - 640 celestial names extending from IO Retea.
Based on an approximate chronology, this places the commencement of the celestial genealogy approx around 17,000 years ago.
The genealogy then transitions through Te Kupenga Ō Te Ao into approx sixty generations of physical whakapapa, culminating in the present-day living Ariki bloodlines.
This genealogy has been publicly recited on more than seven sacred occasions in Hokianga Nui a Kupe, Mangungu, Waitangi-Tau Rangatira, Hikurangi-Tairawhiti, Te Kōhanga Ō Ngā Kāhui Ariki (Castlehill) and Marae Vaeāra'i, Opoa, Ra‘iātea over the past four years.
These genealogies are supported by the Tahu'a Manuscripts of the late Pierre Kouia of Opoa, Ra'iātea, preserving a continuous genealogical line between Ra'iātea and Hokianga.
In 1995, the maiden voyage of Te Aurere lifted the tapu off Te Moana Nui a Hiva and Te Ava Mo'a near Marae Taputapuātea.
According to these traditions, his father, Whitirangimamao, was a Tohunga of Marae Taputapuātea. Te Fa'aroa a Turi Valley is also recognised as the place where the waka Matawhaorua was carved by him for the twin daughters of Toto Ariki, Kuramarotini, and Rongorongo.
Within these traditions, the lifting of the tapu by Te Aurere became an essential spiritual preparation that later enabled Te Kakenga ki Ngā Rangitūhāhā (Roopū Tohunga) to reopen Tomokanga Ngāhuru mā Toru (Stargate Thirteen)—the entrance of Ngā Rangitūhaha - the Thirteen Dimensions of IO Te Rangimāruarua—in July 2025.
That same period also marked the return of his kōiwi to Aotearoa.
These traditions uphold, the re-establishment of IO within Hokianga is understood through the following chronology.
Approximately 17,000 years ago
• To these traditions, the celestial genealogy begins with IO Retea. Brought by Kupe-Ariki to Hokianga approximately 1200 years ago.
• Approximately 640 celestial generations extend from IO Retea before transitioning from the celestial whakapapa into the physical one.
Approximately 700 AD
• Te Kupenga Ō Te Ao, an Ariki Tapairu of Tuamotu and Manihiki marks the beginning of the physical whakapapa.
• Through Te Kupenga Ō Te Ao, the genealogy transitions into approximately sixty generations of physical whakapapa.
Approximately 900 AD
• The eighth of the nine Kupe, journeys to Hokianga, Aotearoa. Places three mauri stones at Te Rerenga Wairua, Ngā Rākau Pūriri and Porirua and claims Aotearoa as his domain.
• He establishes IO within Hokianga.
1995
• The maiden voyage of Te Aurere (descendants of Kupe) lifts the tapu from Te Moana Nui a Hiva and Te Ava Mo'a at Marae Taputapuātea. So the Polynesian Navigators tradition may flourish again
2024
• His kōiwi are returned to Aotearoa.
2024–2026
• Two living Ariki bloodlines, Kupe-Ariki Tāne and Kupe-Ariki Vaine carry and continue these responsibilities through Tahitian marriage traditions enacted at Marae Taputapuātea, Marae Ō Kupe-Ariki - Pae'ao, and Marae Vaeāra'i, Ra‘iātea.
Kupe Ariki Tāne and Vaine are Kupe-Ariki are the 9th.
There are nine generations of this Arikitanga in this tradition from Hiva to Hokianga.
July 2025
• Tomokanga Ngāhuru mā Toru (Stargate Thirteen) is reopened at Marae Vaeāra'i, Opoa, Ra'iātea.
2025
• Three Sacred Waitaha Toki are used to lift the tapu from Marae Vaeāra'i. Kupe has Waitaha whakapapa from Rākaihautu of Uruao Waka.
January 2026
• The Thirteen Mauri Kōhatu from Marae Vaeāra'i are placed in Hokianga to bind and stabilise the spiritual foundations of IO forever.
2026
• Kupe-Ariki re-establishes the Uruuruwhenua and spiritual talisman, re-anchor IO.
• Kupe Nuku IO-Ariki Tāne and Kupe Nuku IO-Ariki Vaine are the living embodiment of the IO established by Kupe-Ariki in 900 AD. His kōiwi stabilise this embodiment also.
Following his return and the re-establishment of IO within Aotearoa, the two living Ariki bloodlines are given and carry the names:
Kupe Nuku IO-Ariki Tāne
and
Kupe Nuku IO-Ariki Vaine.
This reveals Kupe-Ariki and Kupe Nuku are the same person. It also reveals he is an Ariki Tahu'a of IO.
Within these traditions, these names signify the re-instatement of IO Tikitikiōrangi within the spiritual fabric of Aotearoa, through the practice of these tikanga.
According to these traditions, Kupe Nuku IO-Ariki Tāne and Kupe Nuku IO-Ariki Vaine represent the continuing living embodiment of the IO Priesthood and Wānanga from IO Retea approximately 17,000 years ago, to Te Kupenga Ō Te Ao around 700 AD, to Kupe-Ariki in 900 AD, arriving at 2026.
Through this continuity, these traditions understand the IO Priesthood and IO Whare Wānanga continue from IO Retea, to Te Kupenga Ō Te Ao and Kupe-Ariki.
Together, Kupe Nuku IO-Ariki Tāne and Kupe Nuku IO-Ariki Vaine, and the kōiwi of tūpuna Kupe-Ariki serve as the Uruuruwhenua, spiritually grounding the renewed multi-dimensional IO-verse within Aotearoa,
Together with the Thirteen Mauri Kōhatu of Marae Vaeāra'i, the reopening of Tomokanga Ngāhuru mā Toru, the Three Waitaha Toki, the recitation of the
genealogy of more than 750 names from IO Retea to Kupe, that these events are understood within these traditions to unite celestial genealogy, physical
whakapapa, ancestral lineage, sacred geography, priesthood, and the Thirteen Dimensions of IO into a single enduring IO tradition extending from IO Retea, through Te Kupenga Ō Te Ao and Kupe-Ariki, to Kupe Nuku IO-Ariki in 2026.
Within the traditions, Aotearoa stands as Te Taumata Ō IO—the Home of IO—where the restoration of the IO, together with the return of Kupe-Ariki and the reopening of the Thirteen Dimensions of IO, are understood to be spiritually anchored for present and future generations.
These foundations collectively form the intrinsic spiritual infrastructure upon which KŌPŪ ARIKI was established in 2026.
